i am not usually interested in dramatically canon-divergent scenarios because the canon story is what compels me, but i've been obsessed with this moment ever since i re-heard it during my second viewing. from the perspective of someone who already finished the story once and now knows the truth - this was wild.

Picture this for me, will you?

You've been dating this person for a few months now. You had a rocky start, they wanted you to be ready for something you only just discovered days before your first date, but overall you think the relationship is going well. You're comfortable enough to have him over to your place for a quiet dinner. You've had a horrible few days, your entire world seems to be falling apart around you, so you lean on your significant other.

The closest thing you've ever had to a father (your own was emotionally absent and you weren't close to your grandparents) has just had a near death experience. He's okay, but you're still shaken about it. You just want someone to talk to. So you bring it up.

And instead of your significant other being a shoulder to lean on and be open with, they choose to joke about the event. You try to hide that it upset you, they probably didn't mean anything by it. They just wanted to make you feel better, right?

You get the conversation back on track- or try to. They proceed to tell you they're jealous, practically telling you you're lucky you have someone to be so worried about. They didn't have a relationship with their father, or the person who could've been their father figure. Now you feel bad for making it about you. So you try to connect on some common ground based on what they said. You both have deep seated issues with your father.

Your significant other proceeds to deny it, despite just stating otherwise. They're not letting you in. Then, for reasons you still don't understand, they make a point to not only agree that you have those issues, but that it's kinda kinky.

You realize they've talked like this before. Not made it about sex but… they dismissed you. Brushed your feelings or your wants- no matter how small- under the carpet, and made you feel like the things you thought were important didn't matter. Maybe you're overreacting. It's been an awful week, emotions are still running high with no chance of peace, so maybe it's just you.

But then again... maybe it isn't.

ALSO I am learning how to teach very introverted students, something my natural skillset as a teacher does not help me with.

#one of my greatest tools in the toolkit of my teaching (imo) is that I am unpredictable #I will turn on a dime and I’ll share a thought from the depths of my soul or back of the pantry of my random opinions #that will make them laugh or hook them and they want to hear more #with a group of introverted students maybe they love to see it maybe they don’t but it doesn’t work for them to become engaged #they get so quiet and so still #and not in the good way that kind of happens but kind of just in the scared mouse kind of way #BUT. this past week I kind of had a breakthrough #I totally wasn’t planning on it but the moment was right so I talked to them about them being quiet and introverted (gently teasing them)!#and then I said ‘but do you like it when I just stand here and talk about the book’ and they were like ‘yeah! kind of the pressure is off’#and then I said ‘oh! that’s good to know. because when you’re quiet it makes me feel like you hate me’#(not realizing until I said it that that was the heart of the issue)#and they laughed in surprise (i didn’t say it in a way where I was putting that burden on them in a serious way)#and then I said ‘yeah last night I went home like ‘omg was that a stupid thing to say about Frank Churchill?? no one responded’#and then they kind of shriek-laughed at me and they were like noooooo #and then they said what if we gave you a thumbs up when you were done so you know we don’t hate you #and I said that would be great #and THEN a few days later I gave them an agenda for our discussion written out on the board #where I talked and they listened (I called it discussion with myself) and then they had questions to ponder and things to talk about #with each other. and a lot of time. and THEN I cold called them (they won’t volunteer)#but by that time they were so much more relaxed and they knew what we were doing #so they talked more! and it was so goooood #ALSO idk if it was them #or me who had changed but by the time I got to lecturing at them again #I could feel the quiet warmth that I could not before #(the absence of which is what makes speaking publicly instantly a torture to me l o l)#and it helped so much! like. they didn’t say much (some of them did the thumbs up)#but I had cleared the expectations for them and for me tbh and it helped. I was not waiting for a response from them so in fact I got more #of one. and best of all I could feel them feeling both the warmth and the power of Emma a little bit more #it is starting to click. anyway this is so much but y eah #I’ve been wrestling with this problem a l l year. cracking it in December lol

#I went to a brewery with some friends this evening #And as I was getting ready I found myself suddenly remembering an outing from a wintry college evening many years ago #There was a bar on a quiet street near campus that served beer towers (100oz glass tanks that you could split with a group)#And they’d add orange slices if you ordered Blue Moon‚ which felt very sophisticated to cornedbeefhashtwink and his Hollister flannels #Later that night‚ a woman who had left the bar earlier marched back inside and sidled up to my table clutching a slip of paper #Unbeknownst to me‚ she had been sitting with a young man who had spent the evening shyly watching me sip my Blue Moon #And she had his name and phone number in hand #This was bewildering on several levels #I had never actually seen this guy‚ so I had no idea who was hitting on me #And if I was unprepared to be hit on‚ I was even less prepared to be hit on by proxy #More importantly… I was fully closeted at that point in my life #And a stranger had just materialized out of thin air to make a Gay Announcement #I accepted the paper with a rising sense of flattered panic‚ doing my best to casually play the whole thing off #And then I went straight home and Googled #He was very cute‚ as it turned out #I was in no position to reach out to him (and he was from out of state anyway)‚ but that slip of paper felt like a lifeline #And I’m just feeling very tender thinking about it right now #Almost a decade and a half later #I wonder if he remembers putting his friend up to leaving his number all those years ago whenever he sees an orange slice floating in beer

underrated funny thing about lawlight is they never actually did get to confirm that 100% of the time they were basically thinking exactly what the other person thought they were thinking every single time
